Hit-and-run driver kills Detroit boy

Christopher Sandoval dies Sunday after being hit while taking out trash on Bringard Drive

DETROIT – Detroit police continue to search for the driver of a pickup truck who hit and killed a 10-year-old boy who was taking out the trash Sunday.

Christopher Sandoval was hit by a red 2000 or 2001 Dodge Ram pickup truck just after 1 p.m. on Bringard Drive, which is near the Eastland Shopping Center.

Sandoval's mother, Lisa, said she ran to her son's side and listened to him take his last breaths.

"He was breathing for a little bit, long enough for me to tell him I'm sorry and that I loved him. That was it," she said.

She said she had to apologize to him because she was the one who had asked him to take out the trash.

The driver also hit the garbage can which then became wedged under the truck.

The man got out of his car and removed the can before driving away.

"He could stop for a garbage can that had no life in it, but my son laid there lifeless," the grieving mother said.

She said nothing will ever help replace the loss of her son, but she is begging for the driver responsible to come forward.

"You know if it was your kid you would want someone to do it for you," she said.

Lisa Sandoval said her son was a big clown who liked to play jokes on people.

Witnesses told police the driver was a white male and had a mustache.
