Hundreds attend 12-Year-old's funeral

Honor student remembered by family, friends

DETROIT – Hundreds attended the funeral service Friday for Kade'jah Davis, a 12-year-old Detroit girl shot and killed during a dispute over a cell phone.

For the funeral, Davis was dressed in a homecoming gown and a tiara was placed upon her head.

Mourners crowded into Christ Jesus Personal Image Church and honored Davis, who was killed Jan. 31, three days after her 12th birthday party.

"You were the apple of your mother's eye, such a wonderful life you had," said one woman who spoke at the funeral.

Deborah Williams, Davis' English teacher at University Yes Academy, also attended the funeral.

"She was an extremely impressive student, extremely charismatic," said Williams. "She had a smile that would light up a room."

At least 25 people spoke about Davis, an honor student who wanted to be a computer engineer. Many of those who spoke were children.

"I miss her. I love her. She was my angel," said one girl.

Another girl, who fought back tears, said, "Kadejah will truly be missed and she will live everyday through me."

Davis' mother, Almanda Talton, had a message for the community, "soon, get all these guns out of the world, please Lord!"

According to police, 19-year-old Joshua Brown is in custody and charged with first degree murder. Brown's mother, 35-year-old Heather Brown, is accused of helping him get away.

Police said the shooting happened at Davis' home when Brown came to the home looking for his cell phone.

According to police, Brown got into an argument and opened fire after Talton closed the front door.

Talton said as she and her daughter ran from the gunfire, the girl was struck and killed.

At least five bullet holes could be seen on the front door.

"It is a terrible thing to realize that an innocent child was senselessly killed because a gun was fired in a dispute allegedly over a phone," said Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy.?
