DETROIT – Alaina never thought she would hear her car running again.
The Detroit woman's 2000 Chevrolet Suburban looked a lot better before she was nearly carjacked this past month. The sport utility vehicle was riddled with bullet holes -- 12, to be exact -- from an AK-47 rifle. Alaina, a mother of three, was shot in the hand during the attempted carjacking.
"It's definitely a nightmare," she said. "Just moving on, it's been very difficult."
However, on Tuesday, Alaina had the windshield replaced and the bullet holes fixed, all thanks to a couple of guys who saw her story on Local 4 and wanted to help.
"Doing something like this makes everybody feel good," said Dan, of Henderson Glass.
Dan and Rob Dobson, manager at Maaco Collision and Repair in Roseville, saw the opportunity to help someone in a tough situation and they executed.
"We wanted to do something to help her out and give back to the community," said Dobson. "We repaired the door. Repaired the hood. Replaced the fender and then we repaired this other door."
Dobson's crew repaired and repainted all the outside damage to the Suburban and Dan's staff at Henderson did what they do best.
"We pulled the windshield off and prepped it up for the new one, and installed a brand new windshield in the vehicle for her," said Dan.
Alaina picked up her rejuvenated ride on Tuesday.
She gave out grateful hugs to the men who helped get her life back on track.
"It's going to help me get to the doctor. I won't have to depend on anybody and wait. My daughter has been late for school," she said.
