DETROIT – At least four people were injured Friday afternoon when police were investigating a stolen vehicle on the city's east side.
Police were investigating the vehicle near East 7 Mile Road and Greeley Street.
Police said it was not a chase. Undercover officers were checking out a report of a stolen vehicle in the area. The officers, in an unmarked car, pulled up behind a black Jeep Liberty which was suspected of being stolen. The driver of the Jeep took off quickly, drove through a red light, struck the pedestrians and another vehicle, drove through a bus stop and struck a building.
Detroit EMS was at the crash.
Four people were taken to a nearby hospital. The 70-year-old driver of the vehicle which was struck was in critical condition. The others' conditions were not known.
The driver of the Jeep and a passenger fled on foot. Police were searching for two suspects. They believe the suspects possibly were as young as 11 years old.
This was not a Detroit police operation. Undercover officers from several different law enforcement agencies were working on a stolen vehicle case.
