DETROIT – Detroit police now have three men in custody who allegedly stormed a family's house early Thursday morning in southwest Detroit before getting into a standoff with officers that lasted for hours.
Police said the trio broke into a home on Central near Lafayette just before 3 a.m.
A couple and their children were inside and taken hostage.
At the time, the father was been on the phone with his cousin -- Karim Beiruty.
"He just hung up on me. I thought it was weird that he just hung up on me. He didn't even call back," Beiruty said. "I called back and he said, 'Hey, I'm getting robbed. They've got guns. Get over here quick.'"
Beiruty said he didn't hesitate and jumped in his car. When he got to his cousin's house, Beiruty said he parked his car in front of the gunmen's alleged getaway car and called 911.
An hour later, the father, his fiancé and two kids were released unharmed from the house.
"Thank God that she and her two kids are doing fine," Beiruty said. "But, honestly, I couldn't tell you how my boy feels. He's probably traumatized. He came out shivering and shaking."
The father was taken to a hospital to be checked out for some injuries.
Police said one of the suspects walked out with the hostages, another surrendered a couple hours into the stand off and the third suspect was arrested when a special response team went into the house just after 9 a.m.
