Privatization of Detroit garbage collection begins Monday

Private firms take over Detroit garbage pickup

DETROIT – On Monday private firms are taking over trash collection throughout the city of Detroit.

The privatization is the largest in Detroit's history.

The new service will begin in southwest Detroit and on the city's east side.

Bulk trash pick-up will now be every two weeks, instead of once a month.

City officials are hoping this will help in the cleaning up of illegal dumping in neighborhoods.

The privatization was approved by city council in February and is expected to save the city $6 million a year.

It is expected to be in full effect by June. Â
