DETROIT – Support the expansion of greenways in Detroit while shrinking your waistline in 2014 by signing up for one or all six of the cycling and running events Tour de Troit will host in the new year.

The first event will be the 2nd Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Bike Ride on Monday, January 20, 2014. This ride is free, but registration is required.

The ride will begin and end at the McGregor Memorial Conference Center on the Campus of Wayne State University.

The 10-mile route will cover the 1963 March to Freedom and pass several historical sites relevant to Dr. King and other local activists who were integral to the march and the "I Have a Dream" speech delivered at Cobo Arena afterwards.

Tour de Troit, the organization's signature cycling event, which brought 6,000 bicyclists to Detroit in 2013, opened registration at midnight on Jan. 1, with an early-bird registration fee of just $35 through Jan. 30.

The other events scheduled for 2014 include Paczki Run March 1, the Run du Nain Rouge on March 23, Cycle into Spring on May 10, and Bike the Bridge in October.

"Our events are a great way to stay in shape while simultaneously supporting the development of more greenways and other healthy recreational options in Detroit and surrounding communities," said Kelli Kavanaugh, co-director of Tour de Troit.

The non-profit organization Tour de Troit uses a portion of its proceeds to support Detroit-area greenway and bike lane projects. Since 2005, approximately $170,000 has been raised to support greenways and non-motorized transportation projects.
