Vigil held for 8-year-old boy killed when SUV struck him on his bike

Family, friends come together to remember Darrin Wilhite, who was killed in hit-and-run

DETROIT – The man charged in the hit-and-run crash that killed an 8-year-old Detroit boy this week will appear in court on Friday.

On Thursday night, family members gathered for a vigil remembering the young boy. Darrin Wilhite was riding his bike Tuesday night when a sport utility vehicle hit him.

The next day, 47-year-old Alfonso Butler turned himself in to police, who say he confessed to the deadly accident and fleeing the scene.

Family and friends gathered at the corner where Darrin, also known as DJ, was hit. After releasing Chinese lanterns, DJ's father thanked everyone for their support.

"I want to say thank you to everybody. I appreciate you all coming out tonight, giving us your support," said Calais Wilhite.

The crowd at the vigil also made a plea for more working street lights in the neighborhood.
