Girls sickened at pompon camp

Several students hospitalized

A Pompon camp for middle and high school students closed early after several students became ill. The camp was run by Mid American Pompon, which is headquartered in Farmington Hills. The camp was held at Davenport University in Grand Rapids. According to camp organizers, 40 of the 400 students who attended the camp came down with symptoms that appear to be from the Norovirus. The students came from 16 different schools across the state. "The health department has a feeling that somebody came into the camp with it, here to the campus, and that's what started the process," said a spokesperson for the school. "The thinking is that as the person started to mingle with others and when the kids started to workout with each other then it began to spread to the other girls." Several of the affected students had to be hospitalized. The camp started Tuesday and was supposed to run for 4 days. It closed Thursday because of the outbreak. Mid American Pompon issued the following statement about the incident. "At 3pm on Thursday, June 28, 2012, Mid American Pompon was informed by the Administration at Davenport University that our camp session at Davenport University was being cancelled. We agree that the decision was based on the best interest of the health and welfare for all in attendance," the statement read.
