Kilpatrick late on restitution payments to Detroit

Court records show Ex-Detroit mayor supposed to be paying $150 a month

DETROIT – Former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick is running behind on his restitution payment to the city, the Local 4 Defenders have learned.

Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice and resigned from office in 2008 after he lied at a civil trial to cover up an extramarital affair with his chief of staff, which was exposed through a series of graphic text messages. That lawsuit cost Detroit $8.4 million.

Kilpatrick was imprisoned in May 2010 for failing to disclose assets and surrender sufficient funds that could have reduced his $1 million restitution to Detroit. He was released this August and has moved to Texas with his wife and three sons. Following his release, he agreed to pay $150 a month towards the remainder of his restitution

Kilpatrick was released from prison in August and agreed to pay $150 a month toward his restitution debt to the city -- which still stands at more than $800,000. According to records, hiis first payment was due Sept. 6 and received 23 days late. His October payment is also one week overdue.

Kilpatrick, his father and others still face a September 2012 trial on federal corruption charges.
