Coleman said she would conclude her tenure as the university's 13th president when her current contract expires.
She made the announcement at the monthly meeting of the Board of Regents, which will undertake the search for a new president.
Coleman, 69, was appointed to the position in 2002. She is the 4th-longest-serving president in the University of Michigan's history. James B. Angell served 38 years, followed by Alexander G. Ruthven at 22 and Harlan H. Hatcher at 16, according to the university.
