Man recovering after being shot on Lodge Freeway near 7 Mile Road

DETROIT – A man is recovering in the hospital after being shot while driving on the Lodge Freeway near 7 Mile Road.

The shooting is believed to have happened at about 2 a.m.

The shooting victim drove himself to Royal Oak Beaumont Hospital and walked inside with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Troopers and detectives from the Michigan State Police Department went to the scene about an hour later to investigate.

"We were able to locate some evidence that something did occur on the freeway," said Lt. Mike Shaw.

They do not believe the shooting is connected to another fatal shooting that happened on the Lodge Freeway and 8 Mile Road, and are waiting to speak with the victim to determine whether or not it was a random shooting.

"We're gonna continue to interview him. We had to wait for him to get his medical treatment to find out exactly what his story is, his victimology and things like that," said Shaw.

However, he does not believe there's a threat to the public.

"We've had a few shootings that have happened on the freeway system in Detroit. None of them have been random so most of the time anyone's involved in a shooting that occurs on the freeway system, they usually know what happened, why it happened and they usually know who's responsible. I don't think we have anything that shows we have anyone who's just shooting cars on the freeway," said Shaw.

The northbound lanes of the Lodge Freeway reopened Monday morning after an hours-long closure at 7 Mile Road.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Michigan State Police.
