Longtime Detroiters plan to leave city after carjacking in driveway

DETROIT – Shirley and Preston McKee have lived in their home for 27 years, and in Detroit for a lot longer than that.

They loved being here, until a man ambushed Shirley in her driveway.

"When I got out of the car this young man standing right at the tail end of the car with the gun, and he put it up to my head, right in my face," she said.

It happened about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"And I just stood there and stared at him. He said, I'll kill you. Give me the keys. I'll kill you,'" said Shirley.

Shirley complied. The man drove away on 7 Mile Road east of Livernois with Shirley's blue-green Ford Fusion, her groceries and her cane. Preston rushed home from downtown.

"It was traumatic. Shirley has had health issues -- heart surgery, a stroke. I just prayed and told the good Lord to take care of Shirley," he said.

Shirley is an active 77-year-old woman, but now she won't leave her house.

"It's been terrible. I couldn't sleep because I kept seeing that man standing with that gun," she said.

Now, these retired Detroit school teachers feel they have to move out of the city.

"I guess at our age, you know, it's a big change, but we have to be concerned about our safety," said Preston.

They will leave an immaculate home and longtime neighbors who are kind and caring.

"I just couldn't imagine somebody coming in, in the broad daylight, at that time of day, with a gun in your driveway. It's just frightening. I love Detroit, but I don't want to stay here," said Shirley. "I really don't."

Police have this description of the gunman:

A black man between 18 and 20 years old, standing about 5 feet 2 inches with a slim build. He had a high-top fade hairstyle. He was clean-shaven and wearing a white T-shirt and jeans.

The license plate on Shirley's Fusion is 3AH-J88.
