LOWELL, Mich. – About 25 minutes east of Grand Rapids sits a town named Lowell.
Recently, the Lowell police department did something to spread some holiday cheer.
"Most of the contact police officers have with the general public is during a traffic stop. You can find out a lot about that person in that 10-15 minute window, whether they're having a good day, a bad day, or a horrible day," said Steve Bukala, Lowell Police Chief. "And then we got this idea: what if we could change that person's day in real time?"
The police decided to surprise drivers by taking care of their Christmas shopping. Officers would pull residents over, ask what they needed for Christmas, and stall while their secret shoppers found the gifts, wrapped them, and then delivered them to the traffic stop scene.
