A man told police he was sleeping in the home when he woke up and found his girlfriend's son, Matthew John Lander, standing over him waving a machete. He said there was a struggle and Lander was physically pushed out of the home.

Police said the man went to the couch and found his 57-year-old girlfriend had an injury on her face and was apparently not breathing.

CPR was performed and the woman was taken to McLaren Port Huron hospital.

Officers found Lander around 7:15 a.m. Thursday in the backyard of a home in the 1300 block of Miller Street. He was taken into custody without incident.

Medical officials said the woman is on life support awaiting organ donation.

Lander was arraigned Friday and stood mute on two charges of assault with intent to commit murder and was denied bond. He is being held at the St. Clair County Intervention Center.

A preliminary examination is scheduled for March 28.

The case is still under investigation.
