Macomb County corruption investigation: Contractor latest to face charges

MACOMB TOWNSHIP, Mich. – More charges were announced Monday in connection to wide-spread corruption in Macomb County.

Christopher Sorrentino, 51, of Macomb Township, was charged with structuring financial transactions to avoid currency reporting requirements.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Sorrenino accepted a check from Macomb Township in November of 2014 for work he did not perform and paid a cash kickback of $66,000 to the elected official who orchestrated the scheme.

Sorrentino allegedly wrote seven checks in amounts slightly less than $10,000 in order to get around creating a currency transaction report.

The case is part of a wide-ranging corruption investigation centered in Macomb County.

The charge carries a sentence of 5 years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
