Madison Heights police search for robber that hit AT&T store on John R. Road

Robber committed crime during business hours in broad daylight in Madison Heights

MADISON HEIGHTS, Mich. – Madison Heights police are looking for a man who, they said, robbed an AT&T store on John R. Road in broad daylight.

Security cameras captured a young man in a gray hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and a white baseball hat in the store 20 minutes before the robbery. All he did was talk with the clerk, then leave the store.

Police said he returned at 7 p.m. wearing a white mask, white gloves and he was armed with a gun.

Security cameras show the robber force the employee into a back office area and into a room. The robber can then be seen leaving the room with a bag full of money. Police said he was able to steal nearly $300 in cash.

Since the gunman had shown his face to the employee earlier, the employee said he recognized the man and his voice. The robber also was wearing jeans with a distinctive pattern on the back pocket.

"That's been the trend -- nighttime smash and grabs and the taking of phones. In this case it was the taking of the cash," said Lt. Robert Anderson, with Madison Heights police. "In this case, just prior to this, the store was packed."

Police said the robber also had an oval shaped tattoo, about two inches long, on the left side of his neck.

Anyone who recognizes the man on surveillance video is asked to call Madison Heights police.
