Magic Johnson eyes development at old State Fairgrounds site in Detroit

Johnson's development plan to include housing at 8 Mile Road, Woodward Avenue site

DETROIT – Magic Johnson's star power and his business savvy may help breath new life into the old State Fairgrounds site.

His business development team has been negotiating with the city for the past few years. Local 4 has learned a deal may soon be sealed.

When Meijer opened a Detroit store last week, Mayor Dave Bing hinted other big projects soon may be announced.

"A lot of developers are looking. There are a lot of things in queue and I think over the next several months we will see other announcements," said Bing.

Johnson's developments in other cities have been big hits, usually involving building a theatre, retail space, restaurants and at this particular location at 8 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue there would be housing.

The new Meijer has been packed since opening last week. The need for more development is clearly there.
