Man accused in Detroit drunken driving crash attempts to ditch car with kids inside, police say

DETROIT – A man is accused of driving drunk with several young children in his car on Detroit's west side.

Authorities said the man hit a parked car on St. Mary's Street north of Schoolcraft, then tried driving away, but his car was too damaged to continue

Officials said the man then tried to get away on foot, leaving the children behind in his car.

The man didn't get very far. Neighbors held him down until police arrived. When they returned him to his car, as they waited for police, they said they noticed empty alcohol containers and two small children inside the vehicle with no seat restraints.

The driver is now in policy custody.

Officials said the children in his car were not hurt.

No other details were immediately released.
