Man accused of domestic violence arrested after 7-hour standoff in Royal Oak

Clyde Kubiak hides in home with access to firearm, sword collection

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A 41-year-old Royal Oak man was arrested Sunday after a seven-hour standoff with police at his home in the 900 block of North Connecticut Avenue.

Police were called to the home around 10:20 p.m. Sunday by a woman, who said Clyde Thomas Kubiak had assaulted her and chased her into a parked car. She said Kubiak had been trying to pry the car door open but ran into the home after the police were called.

The woman said Kubiak had made threatening statements toward her, himself and his 10-year-old child, who was inside the home.

Police said Kubiak had access to a firearm and a sword collection.

Officers went into the home and brought out the 10-year-old safely, but Kubiak refused to respond to commands. Police said he was hiding somewhere in the home.

The Southeast Oakland SWAT team arrived and tried to talk to Kubiak over the phone and using loudspeakers. Chemical munitions were used in the home, and after seven hours, Kubiak surrendered, police said.

The woman and child were not injured.

Kubiak was taken into custody without further incident.

"Once the child was safely removed from the house, the officers made the prudent decision to step back in an attempt to de-escalate the situation," Chief Corrigan O'Donohue said. "Although it took several hours, I am pleased we were able to resolve this volatile incident peacefully."

Kubiak was charged Wednesday with one count of domestic violence and one count of obstructing, resisting or assaulting a police officer. The domestic violence charge carries a maximum penalty of 93 days in jail, and the obstructing, resisting or assaulting a police officer charge carries a maximum penalty of two years in prison and a $2,000 fine.

Kubiak has previously been convicted of false report of a felony.

Kubiak is being held on $10,000 bail. He is scheduled to return to court April 11.
