Detroit police say Friday that the pair was abducted Thursday and the woman was forced several times to call relatives for money.

The woman also was sexually assaulted. Police say the suspect attempted to sexually assault the girl.

Officers spotted him about 5:30 a.m. Friday on Detroit's east side. Police say he pointed a gun at officers and ran off while holding the girl. He was found hiding in the basement of a vacant house.

Mother, daughter recovering from carjacking, kidnapping

Ruth: ALL RIGHT, WE'LL BE GOING TO GAMES THERE BEFORE WE KNOW IT. STEVE? Steve: TONIGHT, A MOTHER AND HER 12-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER ARE RECOVERING AFTER THEY WERE CARJACKED, KIDNAPPED, THE MOTHER RAPED AS PART OF THIS ORDEAL IN DETROIT. AND NOW WE'RE LEARNING MORE ABOUT HOW POLICE CAUGHT THE GUY BEHIND THIS TERRIBLE STRING OF CRIMES. CHAUNCY GLOVER HAS THE LATEST FOR US. Chauncy: POLICE TELL ME THIS SUSPECT WAS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND ALMOST CAPABLE OF ANYTHING BECAUSE THE ENTIRE TIME HE WAS HIGH ON CRACK! IT'S LIKE FROM A HORROR MOVIE. Chauncy: FOR 11 TERRIFYING HOURS, A 45-YEAR-OLD WOMAN AND HER 12-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER WITH TERROR ICED, KIDNAPPED BY A 28-YEAR-OLD MAN BY GUNPOINT IN DETROIT AND DEMANDED THE WOMAN CALL HER SISTER TO PAY RANSOM. HER SISTER MET HER WITH $200 AND ALERTED POLICE. DETECTIVES USED PINGS FROM THE VICTIM'S CELL PHONE AND LOCATED THEM HERE AT HAYES AND ELMDALE. I KNEW SOMETHING WAS GOING ON FOR THAT MANY CARS TO BE OUT THERE. Chauncy: THE NEIGHBORHOOD WAS ON LOCKDOWN AS POLICE APPROACH THE CAR AND THE MOTHER WAS RESCUED. BUT THE MAN HELD THE DAUGHTER HOSTAGE AND POINTED HIS GUN AT POLICE. CERTAINLY THE OFFICERS HAD THE ABILITY TO USE DEADLY FORCE BUT THEY THOUGHT FIRST ABOUT THE BACKGROUND, THE BACKGROUND MEANING THAT CHILD, BECAUSE THAT SUSPECT HAD CUSTODY OF THAT CHILD. Chauncy: THE GIRL WAS EVENTUALLY FREED BUT THE GUNMAN RAN. OFFICERS TRACKED HIM DOWN ON PHILLIP, HIDING IN THE BASEMENT OF AN ABANDONED HOME. WHATEVER THAT GUY DID WAS BAD ENOUGH, BUT HE DIDN'T KILL THEM. Chauncy: I'M TOLD THE MOTHER AND HER DAUGHTER ARE STILL RECOVERING IN A LOCAL HOSPITAL.

Ferndale police said they initially received a call Thursday afternoon from a woman claiming she believed her sister and niece had been kidnapped after leaving a business north of Detroit.
