Man beaten after Red Wings game; Detroit police never followed up

Detroit police deputy chief says department dropped ball, will investigate now

DETROIT – Local 4 is showing his face only because that's what took the brunt of the beating.

We'll call him Pete. He suffered broken teeth and a nasty gash on his forehead. An x-ray shows his jaw was broken.

Pete ended up on the ground, out cold, for a couple of minutes Monday night outside Joe Louis Arena. However, he remembers vividly what his attacker looked like.

"He was a large guy, probably 6-2 or 6-3, with a bald head, orange goatee, a long goatee," he said.

He said his attacker also was a fellow Red Wings fan. They were walking to the Jefferson parking garage when the request to stop swearing went over poorly. Someone called 911 and Detroit police officers showed up to find Pete bleeding profusely.

"They asked me if I wanted an ambulance. I said no," he said.

Pete said he told them to find the guy who beat him.

"(The officers) said, 'Just get outta here. Go to the station and file a police report,'" said Pete.

He called Detroit police and made a report Monday night. They told him someone would call him back, but no one did.

Local 4 spoke with Deputy Chief Steve Dolunt on Friday.

"Until you called and I made a call, nobody had reached out to the complainant," said Dolunt.

Pete wants to talk to them.

Dolunt made an apology on behalf of the department.

There are security cameras in the area where Pete was beaten. Police will look to see if the melee was caught on video. They say they will do a thorough investigation.
