Man beaten, carjacked by people he thought needed help

Man stops to help driver on Grand River Avenue in Detroit, quickly becomes victim

DETROIT – This isn't the first time the victim has helped someone in need, but this may be the last time after he was beaten and carjacked while helping someone he thought was a stranded female driver on the side of the road.

Pictures show injuries the 35-year-old man suffered while helping a driver. The woman flagged him down on Grand River Avenue near the Southfield Freeway just after 3 a.m. Sunday.

"I'm just glad that they didn't shoot him," said the victim's mother. "Because I could have been planning for his funeral. If you know my son, he will help anybody, regardless of what race or whatever. He'll stop, he'll help you."

After he pulled his '76 Cadillac Eldorado over in front of her dark gray Lincoln Town & Country to give her a jump, a man hopped out and asked him how much money he had on him. When the victim reached into his pockets, the man hit him repeatedly with a shotgun and forced him in his Eldorado.

They took him on a ride.

While on the road, the woman burned him several times with a cigarette lighter while demanding money. Once they parked, they knocked him unconscious, dumped him on the road and took off with his wallet and car.

The victim was unconscious for so long in the cold that he woke up with frostbite.

"My heart is black. You can mess with me, but you can't mess with my kids," said his mother.

His mother now has a warning for people with a good heart like her son. She says you can't trust anyone.

"Don't help them. Stop, stop helping them. I mean, I hate to be that way, but stop helping them. Because it could be a setup," she said.

Police are looking for a white man about 6 feet tall and a black woman with a light complexion who stands about 5 feet 3 inches. She has a lollypop tattoo on her neck.
