Man brightens Waterford neighborhood with giraffe statues

Joe Cummings has faces at least 1 critic, but overall good reviews on giraffe statues

WATERFORD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Mama giraffe went up this past November and quickly became something of a mascot in the Waterford Township neighborhood.

It seemed everybody loved the giraffe. Well, apparently not everybody. The first giraffe-hater sign appeared one dark night about a month ago on Joe Cummings' front lawn.

"I was a little upset, a little mad. But, you know, I can't take every negative thing to heart," he said.

Cummings took it as a challenge and created a baby giraffe. A few days ago, another sign appeared.

Cummings is an artist and a welder as a hobby. As a trade he installs security systems. So, now when he is out working in his garage he has a great view of what is happening on his front law. He doesn't want this to escalate.

"Damage them, paint them ... I don't want anything like that to happen," he said.

Cummings started a Facebook page -- The Cass Lake Giraffe -- that now has nearly 200 followers. Reaction to his giraffes has been great.

Cummings has another idea that he is working on.

"It's going to take me a while to figure out how to put it together and make it, but hopefully by the end of the summer. A big elephant ... put a hose out of his trunk or something, make him water the grass," he said.
