Man calls Detroit police saying he shot niece because he was 'stressed out'

DETROIT – A man called Detroit police Friday morning telling authorities he shot his niece because he was “stressed out.”

The shooting happened at about 10:30 a.m.  in the 15000 block of Winthrop Street.

Sources said police found the 57-year-old man, his mother, and the victim in the living room waiting for police.

The victim was identified as 42-year-old Katherine Grimes.

Grimes was a caretaker for the suspected shooter's mother who has dementia.

"That was her heart. She'd come every morning to take care of this woman," Grimes' mother, Ora, said.

The suspected shooter is in police custody.

Grimes was engaged to be married in October. She was a mother of two children.
