Man caught on video breaking into St. Clair Shore businesses

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. – St. Clair Shores police have released pictures of a man they say broke into two different businesses on two different nights.

Surveillance cameras from Gilbert's Lodge and a Walgreens off Harper Avenue captured the man using a crowbar to break in.

"We don't know if he was trying to be sneaky. We don't know what he was doing," said Det. Brand Benac. "But he was definitely crawling and jumping."

The man, wearing a hooded sweatshirt that partially concealed his face, smashed out a side door of Gilbert's Lodge and went straight for the Keno machine.

"We're assuming he's frequented the restaurant before since he knew where the Keno machine was and thought there would be cash inside," Benac said. The machine was empty.

Gilbert's Lodge reopened in July after undergoing renovations to fix damage it suffered from two fires. Manager Flip Ulrich said he found the break-in "comical."

"After watching the video, we were just surprised at how silly it was," Ulrich said.

Police said the same man, in the same hooded sweatshirt, pried open the doors of the Walgreens on Wednesday. Once inside, the man filled up a trash can full of cigarettes.

Surveillance video shows the man attempting to jump over a row of shopping carts on his way out, but he falls.

Description released by police:

White man, between 50 and 60 years old, approximately 5 feet 10 inches to 6 feet, 1 inch tall, combed back collar-length gray hair. He was wearing glasses, a gray zip-up hooded sweatshirt, black jeans, a chain waller and tennis shoes. He was also sseen walking a brown or black and white pit bull mix dog.

Police said he was driving a 1990-2000 dark colored Buick sedan with mis-matched tires.
