Man charged after teen held hostage with scissors in Dearborn

DEARBORN, Mich. – A man faces several charges for allegedly holding a teen hostage with scissors Wednesday morning at the teen's home in Dearborn.

The 15-year-old, who is only being identified as Haider, told Local 4 he was working out in the basement of his home on Williamson Street around 2 a.m. when he was confronted by the man.

Anthony Jamal Sharay, 19, is charged with home invasion first degree, assault with intent to murder or inflict great bodily harm, felonious assault, and unlawful imprisonment. He is being held on a $500,000 bond. He will be required to wear a GPS tether if he is released.

"He must of heard me boxing because he came downstairs, put scissors to my throat and said, 'Call the police and tell them to come here or I am going to kill you.'"

Haider's sister, Shabreen, said the man had her brother pressed up against a wall with the scissors.

"I told him to come to me. I was trying to lead him outside, but he wouldn't listen," Shabreen said.

Officers responded and tried to get the man to release the teen.

"We were in my room and police were talking to him calmly through the window to get him to leave. I was terrified," Haider said.

Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said the man was eventually taken into custody and was treated at a hospital for self-inflicted cuts. He also lives in the neighborhood, appears to have been on narcotics and has a history of mental illness, Haddad said.
