Suspect in Detroit serial rape case now charged in Grosse Pointe Park attack

Suspect Darian Winfield already jailed on charges in separate incident

DETROIT – An 18-year-old man who is being held on charges for an attack on a woman in Detroit is now facing charges in another attack that happened in Grosse Pointe Park.

Wayne County Prosecutor Kym L. Worthy on Thursday said Darian Winfield is accused of using a sharp object to cut a 48-year-old woman on her face and neck as she walked  Dec. 13 on Cadieux Road near Charlevoix Street. The woman is recovering from her wounds.

Worthy has charged him with assault with intent to murder. He was arraigned Thursday afternoon. He is being held in jail on a $ 1 million bond and is scheduled to be back in court Jan. 27 for a probable cause conference.

Winfield was already being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $1 million bond for a Dec. 30 attack on Radnor Street in Detroit. He's accused of breaking into a home and stabbing a 39-year-old woman. In that case, he's charged with assault with intent to murder, first-degree home invasion and assault with intent to commit criminal sexual conduct.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig has called Winfield a suspect in a string of sexual assaults on the city's east side.

Worthy's office said he is also a person of interest in another attack on 17-year-old Ge'Naye Washington on Jan. 7. Washington was hit in the head during an attack by a man who broke into her home on Radnor Street. She died this week.
