Man charged with fatal hit-and-run in Sterling Heights

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – A 22-year-old Sterling Heights man is charged with hitting and killing a 47-year-old woman who was pushing her disabled teenage son in a wheelchair.

Linda Khayya and her 15-year-old son were walking near the corner of 14 Mile and Ryan roads Monday evening when a red Cadillac struck them and fled the scene. Khayya died from her injuries. Her son was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.

Police said the red Cadillac was found a short time later in Highland Park, and Xhuljan Gjinaj was arrested.

He was arraigned Wednesday on charges of operating while intoxicated causing death, operating while intoxicated causing serious injury, driving on a suspended license and leaving the scene of an injury accident.

His bond is set at $75,000.

His next court hearing is Sept. 14.
