Man charged with police chase down Woodward Avenue

Police say Martin Markowitz went 90 miles an hour from Royal Oak into Ferndale

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A 42-year-old man was arrested early Monday morning after he allegedly fled from Royal Oak police by going more than 90 miles an hour down Woodward Avenue.

Police said officers in the area of 14 Mile and Coolidge saw what they called a "suspicious" white Ford pickup truck turn its lights off and try to dodge them by turning onto a neighborhood street.

A chase ensued and the driver took off down Woodward Avenue.

Police said they tried to stop the driver at 11 Mile with tire deflation devices, but he kept going -- despite two of the tires going out.

Police used a second set of tire deflation devices on the pickup when it hit 9 Mile, a move that finally got it to stop.

The driver, Martin Markowitz of Redford Township, was arrested.

Police said they found stuff in the truck that had been stolen a Meijer store at 14 Mile and Coolidge.

Markowitz is charged with fleeing and eluding police, larceny, retail fraud, driving on a suspended license and reckless driving. His bond is set at $100,000.

Police said Markowitz has previous criminal convictions for fleeing police and larceny.
