Man convicted of Detroit boy's hit-and-run death sentenced to prison time

Alfonso Butler hit 8-year-old Darrin Wilhite, who was riding bike, in September

DETROIT – The man convicted in the hit-and-run death of an 8-year-old Detroit boy has been sentenced to at least 14 months in prison.

Alfonso Butler was in a Ford Explorer last September when he hit Darrin Wilhite, who was riding his bike, on West Chicago near Abington Avenue.

Butler didn't stop, continuing to drag Wilhite and his bike for blocks.

Butler turned himself in to police the next day and pleaded guilty to leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

At his sentencing, Butler said while he couldn't imagine what Wilhite's family was going through, he was struggling as well because he had taken a life.

"I ran out of fear. I'm so sorry," Butler said.

He was sentenced to 14 months to 15 years in prison. The judge also recommended counseling, particularly grief, for Butler.
