DETROIT – A man convicted of a Detroit murder that happened more than 20 years ago could spend nearly 100 years in prison for it.

Rosie Woolwine was last seen alive in June of 1989 at a southwest Detroit restaurant watching the Detroit Pistons win a championship. She was later found shot to death.

Her daughter, Theresa Ramirez, was 7 years old at the time.

"I just remember my dad coming into the bedroom and telling us she was gone," said Ramirez. "It's the first time I'd ever seen him cry."

When Ramirez was 25, she obtained the police file and put heat back into a cold case.

Juan Cruz quickly emerged as a suspect, but he had disappeared.

US marshals found Cruz in Mexico and extradited him to Michigan last year.

He was sentenced Monday to 40 - 90 years on a second-degree murder charge and two years on a felony firearms charge.
