Man killed in southwest Detroit house fire

Joe Lakatos identified by family as victim, was being treated for lung cancer

DETROIT – A house fire in southwest Detroit has claimed the life of a 56-year-old man.

Joe Lakatos died Tuesday morning when the house he shared with three other people on Morrell Street near the Fisher Freeway caught fire.

Lakatos' sister, Helen Mazaitis, told Local 4 Lakatos was being treated for cancer and had three children.

"I was the big sister and he was the little brother but we still loved each other," Mazaitis said.

Lakatos' three roommates were able to escape the fire.

A cause is still being investigated, but family said Lakatos was on a lot of medication and could have fallen asleep smoking. There were oxygen tanks in the home.
