The man was returning from San Souci Island after having dinner when, according to his statement given to investigators, he heard a noise at the rear of the boat, the St. Clair County Sheriff's Department said.

When the man turned to look behind him, he also turned the boat, losing control and flipping it over, authorities said. The man screamed for help and a resident, who launched his kayak, came to his aid.

The man was attended to on shore by personnel with the Clay Township Fire Department. Authorities said after treatment for mild hypothermia, the man was taken to a family member's home.

The airboat sank to the bottom of the 30-foot deep channel. Authorities said an attempt to find and remove it will be underway Sunday.

The U.S. Coast Guard was advised of the area where the boat sank and will be enroute to search for any signs of hazardous material leakage, authorities said.
