Man rescued from collapsed trench in Walled Lake

Fire officials on scene say man was trapped up to his chest, taken to hospital to be checked out

WALLED LAKE, Mich. – A man working on a sewer in Walled Lake had to be rescued Saturday when a trench collapsed on him.

Walled Lake Fire Department officials on the scene said the man, who is in late 60s, was digging in an unprotected trench in the 900 block of N. Pontiac Trail when the sides collapsed.

Other workers in the seven-foot deep trench were able to get out quickly, but the man was trapped up to his chest.

Rescuers spent 20 minutes digging him out.

He was rushed to a hospital to be checked out, but was alert and breathing normally.
