Man shot by Detroit police near Woodward, State Fair

DETROIT – A man was shot by Detroit police officers Friday afternoon near Woodward Avenue and State Fair Avenue.

Local 4 is told the man's injuries are not considered to be life-threatening.

What happened:

Police say the man was suspected in a drug deal at a gas station. Officers followed his vehicle, which was being driven by another person. The man jumped out of the passenger side and ran for an apartment complex. Police say he showed a gun to officers, who shot him in the buttocks.

"The individual that was shot by police jumped out of the car, had a handgun. We're unsure if he pointed it at or was running and pointing toward the officer, we have to look at the video more closely," said Assistant Police Chief Steve Dolunt. "An officer fired several shots, striking the victim in the buttocks ... he was taken to a local hospital."

Officers recovered the weapon.

The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody, too.
