Man shot in back on Detroit's east side

Man shot during gathering at gas station on corner of Van Dyke & Gratiot

DETROIT – A man is fighting for his life after police say he was shot in the back on Detroit's east side.

The shooting happened Saturday in the middle of a gathering at a gas station on the corner of Van Dyke and Gratiot.

Minister Norman McIntyre was doing community outreach like he does every Saturday.

"The boy asked me to pray for him and give him a hot dog so I did," said McIntyre.

McIntyre even ministers to the drug dealers, he said. The Sunoco on Gratiot and Van Dyke is "his church," where he tries to talk some sense into youngsters.

But Saturday night, investigators said about 50 people gathered outside of the store and then gunshots rang out.

McIntyre took cover afterwards as police said a man was shot in the back.

Violence like this is the reason why McIntyre says he hits the streets to share some hope and love, trying to keep his community up and the police tape down.
