Woman shot while hunting deer in Oakland Township

Victim sustained non-life threatening injuries

OAKLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A 34-year-old woman from Oakland Township was shot in the hip Tuesday afternoon when another hunter lost sight of a deer and fired into the woods.

Police say a 64-year-old man from Massachusetts lost sight of a deer he'd seen in the area and fired two rounds of buckshot when he heard movement near Stoney Creek Road and Harmon Road. When he fired those shots, he hit the victim in the hip.

The accidental shooter's brother applied first aid to the victim until authorities arrived. The victim, who was hunting with a friend, was taken to McLaren Oakland Hospital in Pontiac and is in good condition with non-life threatening injuries.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources is investigating the incident.
