Man hit by car on Lodge Freeway, driver flees the scene

Police say victim was on freeway's shoulder to adjust mattress

DETROIT – A 54-year-old man was on the shoulder of the Lodge Freeway Tuesday night adjusting a mattress that was atop a van when he was killed by a hit-and-run driver, Michigan State Police said.

The victim and another person were stopped near 7 Mile Road when a Dodge Charger lost control and hit the man, police said.

The Charger's driver and two passenger ran from the scene.

"One of the two passengers that fled the scene along with the suspect driver is believed to have an injured arm, and he reportedly was driven away from the scene by a passing motorist who offered to help him, possibly giving him a ride to a local hospital," MSP said in a statement.

Police have not released detailed descriptions of the Charger's driver or the passengers.

Police said excessive speed was a factor in the crash.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call MSP's Metro Post at 248-584-5740.
