Manhole covers blow up in downtown Detroit

Underground fire causes manhole covers to go skyward; no injuries

DETROIT – Manhole covers went skyward Tuesday evening at Bates and Congress streets in downtown Detroit.

About half a dozen manhole covers were flung into the air across the road from Compuware in Campus Martius. No one was injured.

DTE Energy says it was an underground fire which caused the covers to blow up from the ground. It's not clear if the fire is from DTE power lines or Detroit Public Lighting ones.

Crews can't get down to where the fire is because the manhole covers were welded shut during the 2006 Super Bowl as a security precaution.

There may be some power interruptions downtown as repairs get underway.
