Mayor Duggan says city will inspect all Detroit Public Schools buildings

DETROIT – After numerous reports of what many called "deplorable" conditions in several Detroit Public Schools (DPS) buildings, Mayor Mike Duggan said the city will be inspecting all of them.

Teachers have been protesting for many reasons including the conditions inside the buildings, according to union representatives. Mold and mushrooms have been found growing in at least two DPS elementary schools.

Mayor Duggan got a tour of school buildings earlier this week and now he says he will have the city doing inspections at every building.

DPS Emergency Manager Darnell Earley said the district appreciates Duggan's partnership.

"The school system will cooperate fully with the City and its inspectors. The District welcomes any additional resources – financial or otherwise – that the City of Detroit can help us to identify to assist the District in addressing its building capital and maintenance needs," Early said in a statement.
