DETROIT -

Mayor Mike Duggan says the city is looking for proposals on what to build at the site of the vacant and dilapidated Brewster Wheeler recreation center.

On Thursday, Duggan said the original plan was to demolish the 6.2-acre site, which is just north of downtown, but now he has hopes for redevelopment.

The site currently contains an approximately 51,780 square foot one and two story brick structure.

The city says famed boxer Joe Louis once trained at the gym which opened in 1929 as the Central Community Center. It later was renamed after Leon Wheeler, Detroit's first black recreation worker.

Budget cuts forced the center's closing in 2006. The mayor's office had said earlier this month that the site was added to a list of places slated for demolition.

The center sits adjacent to what's left of the former Frederick Douglass Homes which currently is in the final stages of demolition.

Louis once lived at the public housing project.
