Much of the country is already vegetarian based on beliefs that cows are sacred.

McDonald's already doesn't serve beef at it's locations in India, instead using chicken.

"When you look at the potential of the country, it's one of the top priority countries and we're laying the groundwork for capturing the market," said Rajesh Maini, a spokesperson for McDonald's in northern India. Maini told the AFP that the fast food franchise hopes to double the number of outlets in India in the next three years.
