A section of Interstate 96 in Livonia, Mich.

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Transportation has announced a new date for the full closure of Interstate 96 through Redford Township and Livonia.

Ramps and interchanges along the freeway will begin closing at 7 p.m. Friday, April 4, from Telegraph Road on the east to Newburgh Road on the west.

Then, the entire 7-mile-long stretch of the freeway will be closed to traffic in both directions after 7 a.m. Saturday, April 5. MDOT will spend $148 million to rebuild the freeway and its overpasses.

The dates for individual overpass closures will be announced at a later date.

MDOT reports the freeway's Schoolcraft Road service drive will have one lane closed throughout the project, beginning on Thursday, April 3.

MDOT expects to complete the project by late October.
