DETROIT -

Meijer on Thursday will open a new supercenter in Detroit, marking a major development for consumers in the city.  It is the first major supermarket to open in the city in years.

The 200,000-square-foot store anchors a development at the site of the old State Fairgrounds site at 8 Mile Road and Woodward Avenue. 

Other stores at the site in include Marshall's and Payless Shoes.

The Meijer store will create more than 500 jobs.

The new Meijer store opens for business Thursday morning.
