Metro Detroiters help celebrate Michigan's 180th birthday

Mike Duggan, James Craig, Vonda Evans wish Michigan happy birthday

DETROIT – The State of Michigan is celebrating its 180th birthday Thursday, and it's a milestone that all Metro Detroiters can enjoy.

Michigan's state motto is, "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look around you."

Nearly 10 million people live in the state of Michigan, but do you know the history behind the Mitten State?

Stevens T. Mason was the first governor of Michigan and the youngest governor elected, at the age of 23.

The state bird is the red robin, the state stone is the Petoskey stone and the state doesn't have a state vegetable.

Local 4's Tim Pamplin hit the streets to celebrate Michigan's birthday with other Metro Detroiters, including members of the Detroit Fire Department, Michigan State Police, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, Judge Vonda Evans, construction workers, postal workers, Chief James Craig and Detroit police officers.

"Happy birthday Michigan, you're looking good today!" Evans said.

You can see all the birthday wishes in the video posted above.
