Sen. Bert Johnson says Virgil Smith may be contemplating resignation

Smith faces domestic violence, assault charges

DETROIT – State Sen. Bert Johnson said his embattled Democratic colleague Sen. Virgil Smith is considering resigning.

Smith is charged with domestic violence, felonious assault and other charges in connection with a shooting incident involving his girlfriend and ex-wife at his Detroit home. He has been removed from his Senate committees and relieved of his caucus responsibilities while the case moves through court.

"There is talk of expulsion or resignation, whichever comes first," said Johnson. "We all have kept the three of them in our prayers. I just hope the best for everybody involved."

Smith, who represents the 4th Senate District, was arraigned on the charges this week. He posted bond Tuesday and is scheduled to be back in court May 22 for a probable cause hearing.

Johnson, also a Democrat, represents Michigan's 2nd Senate District.
