More than 150 Michigan Army National Guard Soldiers will be returning from Afghanistan. Following a nine-month tour of duty in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, Soldiers from the Owosso-based, 144th Military Police company return home.
The homecoming ceremony is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 23, at Owosso High School.
The 144th Soldiers performed various duties at separate locations. A platoon of Soldiers served as police advisers to 18 separate police districts within their area of operation. These Soldiers conducted five training missions and trained more than 1,400 Afghan policemen.
Eleven 144th Soldiers were awarded the Bronze Star Medal, five Soldiers received the Combat Action medal and one Soldier was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. This unit was under the command of Capt. John Vandusen.
More than 500 Michigan National Guard Soldiers and Airmen remain deployed across the globe in support of the global war on terrorism.
