Michigan State Police: Man impersonated police on I-94 in Washtenaw County

State police say armed man pulled over, approached other driver along I-94

SCIO TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Michigan State Police are seeking charges against a man accused of driving a Ford Crown Victoria equipped with a vehicle spotlight and pretending to be a police officer on eastbound Interstate 94 near Fletcher Road in Scio Township.

State police say the call came in about 8:20 p.m. Monday to report a reckless driver using his vehicle spotlight -- similar to what police use -- to flash other drivers to get them to move into a different lane so he could pass them.

The caller said he thought the Crown Victoria was a police car but he became suspicious when it passed him. He followed it and flashed his lights behind it. Eventually, the driver told dispatch he had stopped on the shoulder of eastbound I-94 and the Crown Victoria pulled up behind him.

The Crown Victoria driver got out of the car and approached the caller with a flashlight in one hand and a gun in the other. The caller said the man was wearing a vest with "Agent" printed on it. He briefly talked with the caller, who asked him if he was a police officer. The man just walked back to the Crown Victoria and drove away.

State troopers tracked the vehicle to Southfield where Southfield police officers stopped it. Troopers caught up and found the driver, who indeed was not a police officer. He told troopers he was working for a private fugitive apprehension task force. He was arrested.

State police are seeking felonious assault, impersonating a police officer and felony firearm charges against the man. Meanwhile, he is being held at Washtenaw County Jail.
