GRANDVILLE, Mich. - Authorities say a thief stole a Michigan State Police rifle, badge and other items from a personal vehicle parked overnight at a West Michigan hotel.

TV stations WOOD and WZZM report the theft of the off-duty police official's weapon happened earlier this month in Grandville, near Grand Rapids.

Police say a window was smashed to get into the locked truck. Personal items were taken, but it wasn't believed the thief knew the truck contained police-issued items.

The theft is under investigation.
